Conference: «Good Lawmaking – Implementation of European Law in Switzerland»

Wednesday, August 19, 2026, 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Conference Room 301, Federal Palace, Bundesplatz 3, 3003 Bern

Switzerland’s integration into the European Single Market on the basis of the Bilateral Agreements I and II requires the transposition of European Union legal acts into Swiss law. The federal government in particular, but also the cantons, face the challenge of incorporating new regulatory concepts into existing Swiss law and dealing with different legislative techniques. The implementation of European law concerns, on the one hand, the Federal Assembly as the legislative body. On the other hand, the Federal Administration plays a significant role in the preparation of legislation. The Federal Office of Justice, from a legal perspective, and SECO, from an economic perspective, play a particularly important role in this regard. Finally, within the framework of executive federalism, the cantons are key actors in the implementation process. With the Switzerland-EU Package (Bilateral Agreements III) and the dynamic adoption of law it entails, the implementation of European law in Switzerland is once again gaining considerable significance.

The conference will explore these issues through presentations and discussions. It is aimed at members of parliament, government officials, academics, and other interested parties.
