National and international cooperation

The Centre for Democracy Studies Aarau’s research activities in the field of democratic innovation over the next four years are also linked to the inter-university research focus on democratic innovations. This was co-founded in 2024 by the Centre for Democracy Studies Aarau and the Département de science politique et de relations internationales at the University of Geneva, is anchored in the strategic partnership between the Universities of Zurich and Geneva, and is supported by a joint initiative. Its central concern is to advance scientific research on the topic, offer academic teaching, and contribute to strengthening democratic innovation and citizen participation through targeted public relations work. The focus is on establishing and operating a database on democratic innovations in Switzerland. This is intended to enable the use of synergies at the national level, thereby promoting scientific research into democratic innovations and making them more useful in practice. The Centre for Democracy Studies Aarau can also benefit from cooperation with the world-leading Center for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance (CDDGG) at the University of Canberra in this key area. In a cooperation agreement concluded in 2025, the Centre for Democracy Studies Aarau and the CDDGG agreed to promote and carry out joint publications and research projects, as well as guest visits and joint courses such as summer schools.
