This project investigates the ability of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically large language models (LLMs), to emulate human deliberative reasoning—a cognitive process fundamental to democratic and sustainable decision-making.

The AI4Deliberation project aims to develop and test AI-enabled tools and processes to facilitate large-scale deliberations in public decision-making.

The application of deliberative democracy principles in real-world settings was examined in this project, with a focus on reconciling theoretical frameworks with actual practice. Data was primarily sourced from Participedia and was analyzed through quantitative approaches, integrating multi-factor analysis and structural equation modelling. The project achieved three main targets: identifying dominant structures and criteria in global deliberative practice, framing new typologies of these practices, and assessing their individual and collective outcomes.

Im Herbst 2023 fand in der Schweiz der Zukunftsrat U24 statt. Beim Zukunftsrat handelte es sich um ein neues Format der politischen Beteiligung, der seine Teilnehmer:innen per Losverfahren bestimmte. Zielgruppe des ersten Zukunftsrates waren Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene zwischen 16 und 24 Jahren (U24). Im Rahmen dieser Durchführung beauftragte die Schweizerische UNESCO-Kommission und die Schweizerische Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft das Zentrum für Demokratie Aarau damit, innerhalb dieser Zielgruppe eine repräsentative Befragung durchzuführen und den Zukunftsrat zu evaluieren.
