Democratic processes require the active participation of citizens in political decisions. But analyses show that political engagement is declining. The interest in politics is decreasing, voting participation is dropping. Numerous countries are reacting to this with measures to revitalise political engagement. The effectiveness and consequences of such measures to date remain largely unexplored. This is the point at which the research focus «Democracy and it citizens» takes up the issue. It also addresses the question in how far voting on issues and elections via internet change democracy.
