Theoretical discussion and empirical examination of citizenship education

The projects in this group contribute to the development of civic education as a discipline. They make a contribution to its scientific and institutional establishment. The projects study the interfaces and intersections of related school topics and subjects, especially history, and in this way, sharpen the profile of school civic education.

Test for Citizenship in the Canton of Aargau

In the canton of Aargau, the law of citizenship, including the cantonal procedure for regular naturalisation, is revised. An online-test "Staatsbürgerschaftsprüfung" and a Listening-Test (one of the competences of languages) have been developed and are used by some of the communes of the canton in their procedures. This use of the tests will be evaluated in order to validate the questions, to define the time available for going through the test and in order to know about test results. The adjusted tests will be available by the end of 2013.

Initial Training

In the framework of a comparative study of teacher education, several European countries document the tenets, structure and material of the subjects "citizenship education", "social/cultural studies", and "history". The Centre for Citizenship and History Education collects data for the standardised part of the research project and looks in detail at interdisciplinarity in teacher education.
