Scholarly research on questions of democracy lies at the heart of the Centre for Democracy Aarau. Many of the projects deal with themes that play a central role in our political life: referendums and elections, the militia system, the implementation of citizen's initiatives, civic education, or modern methods of teaching history in schools.

Internationally recognized, publicly accessible

The research activities of the circa 45 members of staff at the ZDA is subdivided into four focus areas. These are concerned – cross-departmentally – with core areas of political, legal and educational democracy research. The aim is to secure an internationally recognized research capacity in these main areas, with research findings that are noticed and discussed in the research community. A further aim is for these to flow into academic and further education, and to become available to the public.
